One thing I say to a lot of retailers is, building the plane while you are flying it is incredibly difficult. But what AI will do for everyone outside your market – they’ll be able to come into your market and beat you at your own game, far cheaper than you’re able to do it, with pretty much the same product. So it then comes down to marketing.

When discussing how to achieve accurate AI results in business;

You want to give it good quality data. So the more good quality, or the more right answers you give it – or the more good wrong answers you give it – the better it gets. We obviously have a world where – especially with things like Twitter – there’s a lot of misinformation out there. And so it’s really important, when we’re training our AI and using machine learning, that we give our system really high quality data that is correct, or not correct, in order to get the outputs we want, not just noise or fake news.

Don’t be predictable. Don’t just use the same playbook. Don’t do the same things year in, year out. Use data to inform your decisions but look at what you’re doing. Evolution is a really important part of business – growing and continually moving – but what’s more important is revolution. Understanding, when is the right time for revolution? Because, it is expensive, but there is a need, at times, for revolution. One thing’s for sure, don’t stand still and don’t think, because you have a market-leading position, that you’re going to be in that spot forever.

One of the things I use a lot is, giving people time back. If we can reduce rework, poor quality, useless meetings with no agenda that run for hours – the idea is to give people time back.

If you have a great culture, if you invest and you reward colleagues – even with a simple ‘Well done, you’ve done a great job today’, or ‘You’ve done something brilliant with that customer’ and ‘Look what you’ve done in that sale’ – just that level of recognition can make an absolute difference in how people feel in the work they do. And so the cultural aspect, I think, really can help drive that growth momentum, and help people stay in the business which then means that you get better experiences and that your customers do, and hopefully they spend more with you and you continue to grow.

Projects involve pain – they just do. And there always comes to a point where you think to yourself, ‘Is this really worth it? Are we going to get to the end of it?’ But you always do get to the end of it – the important thing is to try and get to the end of it as seamlessly, as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and up with the best possible results.

Understanding what it costs to make somebody productive in your business – and I don’t mean just onboarding, I mean getting them from the day they start, to the day they actually make financial contribution that would be the equivalent of one of your good members of staff – and investing in the processes that improve people quickly, and retain them post that, that for me is about understanding how you can reduce costs. It’s not a fluffy, HR training development issue, it’s a bottom-line cost-saving exercise.
